Allen Park — When it comes to Week 1 of the NFL season, one of the most exciting parts is getting eyes on what’s new.
Detroit Lions fans can’t wait to see how the offense operates under first-year coordinator Drew Petzing. And there’s a natural affinity for the rookie class, including offensive tackle Blake Miller, edge defender Derrick Moore, defensive back Keith Abney and defensive tackle Skyler Gill-Howard, who was one of the brightest spots from the preseason.
How about veteran additions Chuck Clark and Devin White? Clark, the former Steelers and Ravens starter, will hold down the fort while safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch continue to work their way back from injury. While White, a former Pro Bowler who had a career-high 174 tackles last season, backfills the loss of Alex Anzalone.

Oh, wait, we forgot about DJ Wonnum. Honestly, it feels like everyone kind of has, despite the free-agent addition filling one of the most-talked about spots on the roster the past few years, the starting edge defender opposite Aidan Hutchinson.
But remember, the Lions bypassed re-signing Al-Quadin Muhammad after a breakout 11.0-sack season in favor of Wonnum. Initially, that move felt financially motivated, but the contracts are fairly close. No, the Lions preferred Wonnum because of his more well-rounded skill set, which includes superior run-stopping ability.
