Detroit Lions coordinators Kelvin Sheppard, Dave Fipp and John Morton met with the media on Thursday. Here are some of the highlights from those sessions.
I don't really like that answer from Morton regarding Monty running into stacked boxes. The whole point of the question was that it hasn't been successful.
Maybe Morton considers him getting in the EZ a success (which makes sense) or that trusting Goff to get into/out of the right play call is a success.
This is also a thing that Monty has acknowledged as well, where they seem to have plays for Monty and plays for Gibbs and while there's some overlap, I think teams are seeing that the Lions' run rates are much higher with Monty in. With Gibbs, it's a mixed bag, run and catch.
I wonder if it's Morton playing coy. I wouldn't be surprised if this is in part setting up defenses to believe they understand The Lions tendencies while The Lions are preparing tendency breakers in their future game plans. Good self scouting would unearth this.
I agree. Against a weak opponent, you can demonstrate tendencies and still overwhelm them. Against evenly matched or superior opponents, you can benefit from a few timely counters to those tendencies.
I feared that Morton would be BJ with less variance and guile, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Or if that is the case, Goff (or the team) is saving him from himself. In any case, I worried to much during the offseason.
I think it’s more of a question dodge; he’s definitely not going to reveal their plan for dealing with the 8 man box. Instead he pivoted to praising a position group on doing something they don’t get credit for typically. I agree that the answer doesn’t make sense from a logical construction standpoint.
As always, great write-up, Justin. I really enjoy how you lay out/organize these coordinator recaps, with snippets from each one interspersed with the others, rather than separated out into long sections for each. Keeps it interesting, and you maintain the flow, sort of back-and-forth, really well
