As soon as I heard Morton was going to reside in the sky, it seemed to be a wrong choice. Sure he can see better there, but being face to face with the players just seems so much more important. Don't phone it in, have an assistant in the box talking in Morton's ear.

I don’t understand why they haven’t given Scotty Montgomery a chance at the OC role. I’m not saying he should automatically get it, but at least interview him. Whoever they choose, they need somebody who can figure things out on the fly, in game.

I have a feeling that even if Ben Johnson had inexplicably stayed as OC this year, the Oline and losing Laporta was gonna be big trouble. I do think that offense would have been better, probably good enough to get them to the playoffs, but not good enough to get to and win a Super Bowl.

One outside of the box OC you would never have to worry about leaving is Gruden. Although Im not sure he would be an upgrade at this point.

Does this mean David Shaw leaves too?

Rapoport is reporting that David Blough is a candidate

Good man. Sorry to see it, but inevitable I guess.

Had to go. Wasn’t good enough.

When there is a risk or an opportunity, a person looks smarter when that person has articulated the risk / opportunity and then it comes to pass.

I said before the season that the loss of Ben Johnson was being underestimated and that John Morton’s single miserable season as OC with the Jets was a bad, bad, bad sign. Turns out, I was right.

I’m a huge believer in Dan Campbell but he absolutely failed by failing to prepare for Ben Johnson’s departure. It’s not like it came as any sort of surprise.

I wouldn't say Dan failed to prepare. His plan was to bring in Morton. He knew Ben was leaving eventually. His mistake was instead thinking that hard work and fobsessive flm study would equate to creativity in play design and play calling and being able to make in game adjustments.

I might say that makes it a bad plan. John Morton previously had a miserable season with the Jets, when he was known for being too pass happy.

I’m not a mind reader but I honestly don’t think that was Coach Campbell’s plan. Bringing a coach through your own system and having him on staff, that’s a plan. Counting on a man who is on another staff, that’s not reliable.

I'm not saying it was a good call, I'm just saying he wasn't unprepared for Ben"s departure. He had a history with Morton and he was on staff for a season, so there was trust built into their relationship. I don't disagree with you on promoting from within. Who is your preferred choice for OC?

Soooooo what are some names Justin?

Ryan Higa's avatar

I'm guessing Scottie M and Hank will apply and be considered. Maybe David Shaw? Blough's name has been tossed about since about halfway through the season.

Justin Rogers's avatar

Working through it still.

I assumed as much and appreicate the prompt coverage as always sir!

Zero percent chance Dan is calling plays this season. This move shows that they’re not content with status quo and looking to upgrade.

How long have you had this one written up and saved in drafts?

Tim Bowers's avatar

Legend. You for this comment and being first to comment with it. And probably for Justin too probably actually having most of this one written up already.

Jeff Guynn's avatar

Is that what written from scratch means?

Justin Rogers's avatar

I wrote it from scratch after I posted the update in the chat.

Had to happen. Hard to scheme around an interior oline with 2 rookies and a vet on his last legs, but he takes the fall.

Frank's avatar

Very possibly TWO vets on their last legs.

I’d call Mike Kafka stat!
