Offseason speculation that the Detroit Lions might move on from receiver Tim Patrick has come to fruition. The team is shipping the veteran to Jacksonville in exchange for a Day 3 draft pick.
Receiver room seems thin to me. One injury to the starting three and then what? TeSlaa looked good in camp but he is not tested much against other team's starters. I don't see where letting Patrick go is a mistake. He filled a role as well as anyone might. But I guess we must consider two pass catching TE's and two pass catching RB's in the mix also.
Sounded like Raymond was the preferred #3 according to camp reports. Maybe Morton prefers a smaller quicker receiver in his offense? I would think TeSlaa eventually becomes the official #3 at some point.
I hope the Lions get a big guy for the practice squad. Need a back up for that receiver spot. Meeks or someone else they are thinking about. Otherwise, it seems like it is Zylstra--not awful, but not ideal out of his TE position.
Last year we were searching for big X WRs all offseason and got Patrick and Robinson right as season began. Patrick fit what we needed perfectly. Robinson had a blocking role. TeSlaa is now our only big WR.
If they like Meeks and intend to bring him back to the 53, this makes waiving him essentially indefensible. Exposure to waivers for zero reason. But who knows. Maybe the deal just came together. But this is no way an orchestrated, “Brad is cooking,” type plan.
I would have preferred to keep Patrick just for depth purposes. A reliable old head has value. But maybe he wouldn’t have been happy with that role. Dan did say he was at least a bit frustrated by lack of targets.
This feels like a good move for everyone! Jaymo/TaSlaa benefit and Patrick goes somewhere he’ll get more reps and clear path to playing. Thanks Tim for what you did for us last season!
Great job getting value for Patrick. TeSlaa may have some growing pains but he’s earned the chance to play. I imagine he will split some of the time even so
I'm not surprised, and happy in a way, to see the Lions moving on from Patrick and Skipper. Wish I felt as confident in Manu as I do in TeSlaa. I'm excited to see how Brad and Dan fill out the roster and practice squad. Based on preseason play it didn't look like our third string earned many spots.
Luckily Manu isn't far off from where he should be development-wise I think, but obviously I think the reality is that the likelihood he is able to jump in ability next year may be smaller than we hoped. We will see

How long were you up for the day before you saw this?

awesome job by Holmes to get something for him AND to ease the cap hit

This makes the release of Meeks even more odd imo

He gave us what we needed when we needed it. Glad we could send him back out into the world with a little cash for this coming year.
