There’s obviously a lot on the minds of Detroit Lions fans following Monday’s retirement announcement from Frank Ragnow. So, I wanted to open the mailbag to address the topic.
In a sense, this is no different than losing Ragnow for the season due to injury. The Lions would still need to make adjustments. The difference is that after this season they will know if they have to make further adjustments in the OL...as in signing a F/A or in the draft.
Another point, why would Holmes trade up for a center before this year, he had Frank Ragnow.
Even at guard he went Free Agency to fill the holes.
He wouldn't go into a draft expecting to fill a hole, but if he saw Zabel as a top 3 Center like Ragnow was he might have gone for that. Let's put it this way, Zabel fit the Lions scheme and culture wise better than any of the EDGE players, question would be does Holmes value Center that much and I know what I think about that.
The other part is we don't even know if he was really looking to trade up and how far he was willing to go. Did he start calling in the early teens or mid 20's.
I think having a kid really changed Ragnow it brings up so much emotionally and having lost his father... I would think this played a big part. ESP if he isn’t able to easily play with his kid because of the beating he’s taken.
Wait, why on earth would they cut Hauss if they signed Za?
Do we think Muhammed wouldn't make it through waivers and to the practice squad because he looks like a perfect candidate for the veteran practice squad.
I guess someone could claim him, but he cleared waivers last year. The Lions signed him off a practice squad, but the Lions were hit pretty hard and were pretty desperate. Since then he was a free agent in the off-season that the Lions signed for the vet minimum late in the FA process and when teams have 90-man rosters.
I think I could take the chance with Muhammed, if Davenport or Paschal go down he will be sitting right in front of everybody's nose in the locker room after practice.
My favorite Lions Centers over the years are Ed Flanagan (RIP #54), Kevin Glover and Frank Ragnow. All straight up studs that I think were equally talented.
God I'm gonna miss Frank the Tank. Is this the biggest Lions retirement since Calvin? Can't recall one bigger.
That said, 3-1 since 22 gives me better hope than I woke up with today.

I hope this gives the lions capital to sign Branch and maybe Jamo.
Forgot to ask, any idea who the C was at GA? Do college teams prefer their best IOL play C or is it more circumstantial?
Jared Wilson who went in the 3rd round to the Pats

The only long term center I remember is Dom, he was fun but not the level of player Frank was. Hopefully Tate continues that legacy.
