Allen Park — I had an idea a couple of weeks back that I’d analyze the available over/under odds for the 2024 Detroit Lions season, as set forth by one of the popular gambling websites.
It clearly wasn’t a unique thought as my former colleagues over at the Detroit News tackled the topic as part of their season-preview package this week. Amusingly, they settled on what I also found to be the best option, FanDuel, but I found myself unhappy with the sportsbook’s overall lack of depth.
Sure, you can place wagers on Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, David Montgomery and Sam LaPorta, but not Jameson Williams or Jahmyr Gibbs. The News reporters worked with what they had and wrote a good piece, while I’ve decided on a different approach. Instead of settling for Vegas’ odds, I’m going to create my own.
If nothing else, it should make for interesting conversation and something to look back on at the end of the season to gauge our power of prognostication.
