First impressions after inaugural media session with new Detroit Lions OC Drew Petzing
Indianapolis — The Detroit Lions have raved about incoming offensive coordinator Drew Petzing’s attention to detail. Mine, on the other hand, has clearly dulled while working from home the two months since the season has ended.
In his first media session with many of the reporters who will cover his tenure in Detroit, Petzing held court in a semi-quiet corner of the Westin hotel lobby late Monday afternoon. And despite expressing a distaste for opening statements, Petzing reluctantly delivered one at the recommendation of the team’s media relations staff.
Petzing talks fast. It’s one of the first things you notice. Appropriately, less than a minute into the opening remarks he used the word “excited” seven times.
Then, a pause, following a sentence that sounded like a logical conclusion and a gateway to the question-and-answer segment. The first question was easy. Only a few minutes earlier, left tackle Taylor Decker announced he was returning for an 11th season. It was a gentle lob to get the ball rolling.
But as I started to talk, Petzing let out a fraction of a word, a clear continuation of his opening remarks. It was too late, the train of my question had left the station.
False start, 5-yard penalty, replay first down.
