Allen Park — Signed as a short-term insurance policy the Detroit Lions never needed to cash in, quarterback Jake Fromm was somehow able to make enough of an impression in two weeks that he earned a permanent stall in Detroit’s locker room.
It’s even more surprising when you consider he didn’t take a single team rep in practice during that stretch. His only throws came in the fourth quarter of the third preseason game, where he completed six-of-eight for 89 yards.

He was signed Aug. 12, a couple of days after Detroit backup Hendon Hooker suffered a concussion. With starter Jared Goff not scheduled to play in the preseason, the Lions couldn’t afford to go into an exhibition matchup with only one available QB, which led to the precautionary addition.
In the end, Hooker cleared protocol shortly after the signing, short-circuiting any need for Fromm. But need managed to morph into genuine interest over the next 14 days.
