Lions camp observations: LaPorta rounding into form; another situation ends in a turnover
Allen Park — Here are some notes and observations from the Detroit Lions’ Tuesday morning training camp practice.
● The final day of work before the team’s preseason opener on Thursday, the non-padded session was closed to the general public. Instead, the team hosted approximately 2,500 people from more than 50 community groups tied to the team’s inspire change initiative and the Detroit Lions foundation.
In terms of inactives, it was largely the same list that it’s been for the past few days. The only new absence was cornerback and ace special teamer Khalil Dorsey. That was offset by the return of safety Avonte Maddox, who was sidelined on Monday.
Linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez (ankle) and rookie defensive end Derrick Moore (groin) appear to be making steady progress toward returning after Thursday’s game, going through workouts off to the side with a member of the team’s training staff.
Meanwhile, safety Kerby Joseph hasn’t been spotted for a few days. I asked coach Dan campbell about the former All-Pro’s progress and learned Joseph is away from the team to address a personal matter. His rehab remains on track and the team is continuing to target an early-season return to action for the defender.
● For one-on-one work, my attention went to the receivers vs. the cornerbacks. Here’s a recap:
