Love resigning Decker, just makes trading future draft picks for Manu seem kind of redundant now. I know he’s a project but with Sewell and Deck both locked up seems like it could’ve been used elsewhere.

Philly did things the same way. They had their project on the shelf for 3 years, and now he’s the starter. I think Deck’s contract length is perfect, and we don’t have to force or rush the rookie. It’s a long-term investment of resources. Extremely well done by Holmes, IMO, not a waste of resources at all. You might just need to get used to having a front office that actually operates with a consistent cohesive plan.

Thing is, he's been saying this since day one. Awesome to see it come to reality

How does this deal compare to other left tackles of similar age and skill?

Justin Rogers's avatar

On the surface, similar. Dion Dawkins' age and contract are in the same ballpark. It might look a little different under the hood, but this is going rate for the production. Age hasn't showed up as a negative for Decker, to date.

IIRC, OTs seem to have longer athletic shelf life, barring injury. Still, given Decker's feet, I'd be surprised if this weren't his final contract. And then there's that shiny new Tongan from BC who is sure to be the next Sewell in two years time, right? 🙂

Love this... guy is playing at an insanely high level and you can't measure what he brings from a leadership perspective. Had to happen and I'm glad it did before the season starts.

Good for Deck and the Lions. Another example of the best getting office in the league

Really happy for both the Lions and Decker to get this deal done. The team just keeps making solid decisions. So refreshing.

More proof we have the right people in the FO. Getting these deals done and avoiding drama is Brand New Lions MO.

Showing love to 97.1 interesting on Brad's part

Justin Rogers's avatar

Probably not a terrible idea to play nice with the radio partner, but it just might have been a matter of circumstance with the timing. 97.1 was broadcasting live and the deal probably got done shortly before the sit-down. Heck, it hadn't even leaked to the Schefters of the world yet.

I was wondering which one it is, not that we will ever know. I think the Lions are trying to bring them into the fold

Was your conversation with Sheila on or off the record?

Justin Rogers's avatar

Yes. That was casual and something that doesn't happen often.

Dennis Grey's avatar

I hope she realizes how embarrassed some of us fans are on how we treated her and how appreciative we are now. I made sure to yell Thank you to her.

Just pour on the love moving forward man. Sheila rocks. There will be some downs. We know the downs. What did she say? “We’re doing it the right way.” They are. Ever play the right bet at the poker table but lose the hand? Just win the tournament man.

Sheila rocks!

Let me put it this way, she feels the love of the fans.

Dennis Grey's avatar

I would have yelled hello but you and the other beat writers looked very focused

Great news. Good job on the scope Justin.
