Hope I am wrong and he does have experience and did show flashes of brilliance but I applaud the Lions for moving quickly to find a replacement. Just hope it is the right one.
Dobbs is a better option than id have expected to be available at this point of the offseason. He at least has some starting experience, played half a season as recent as two years ago, and is familiar with the system. Hard to imagine a better option at this point, without having to trade for him.
Dobbs is an upgrade from Bridgewater and the history with Petzing will ease his introduction to the Lions. His legs make him a perfect backup if we need him for a couple regular season games. I hope he never leaves the bench.
I'm of the opinion that backup quarterback doesn't matter. Because if that guy is playing before any meaningful amount of time your season is over. However, I have to wonder if they really plan on going into the season with Josh Dobbs as qb2. I'm not going to pretend like I know who else is out there that would be a better option, but Josh dobbs? I don't know, maybe I'm just walking contradiction.
Backup QB does matter, but I don’t think the goal can be to get one to play/win a lot of games. The expectation has to be a bit more modest because nobody has 2 starter-level QBs.
I have to say I don’t hate the idea of someone as smart as Dobbs in the QB room, working through the in-game stuff with Goff. Like almost every other backup, he hasn’t shown he has the tools to win consistently over a long stretch, but he’s definitely in the upper tier of backups I’d want for a series or two, if Goff was out for a handful of plays.
We’ll have to see how Petzing looks as a play-caller, but if he’s as good as we hope, with the Lions skill players, I’d probably bet on Dobbs for one week with a well-schemed game plan.
We are halfway into trading camp, any guys your picking up are going to be among a similar teir, each having their own shortcomings. It makes sense to sign a guy the team and the OC are familiar with to hit the ground running. Honestly I think he could be an upgrade over what Teddy had to offer this year.
Given Goffs injury history (or lack thereof) backup position in DET is as much about helping prepare the starter (like another coach). Given Dobbs’ history and familiarity with Petzing’s offenses, he seems like the total logical choice.

And 2019 Bridgewater/2022 Cooper Rush should probably be considered outliers…

What if Goff is out 4 games and a good backup goes 2-2 or 3-1 vs a bad one that goes 0-4. Does the backup matter then? I’d say of course.
