I wouldn’t be opposed to it solidifying the middle of the line for Goff would be great. The Oregon guard could be had in the 2nd maybe as well. I can’t remember where I saw it but someone graded them versus similar
The best picks for Holmes and company have been when they take the guys with the highest ceilings regardless of position value. So the pick makes total sense.
Justin I have to agree with you. If Venga Ioane is leaps and bounds better at HIS position then any other players are at theirs at 17...then you HAVE to take the better player. If you're telling me I'm going to have a line of Sewell, Ioane, Mays, Ratledge, Borom....I can more than live with that. And who knows, they might find a more viable starter at RT in the 2nd or later rounds. But Ioane (if he comes as advertised), Mays, and Ratledge would be a rock solid Interior.
The Lions Super Bowl is almost upon us. The 2026 draft choices will be made with most picks used for lower or less known players. Maybe driven by the Best Player Available according to the scouting staff and GM. Exciting days ahead.
I think what I like so much about Iaone is the “idea” of him, based on what I’ve read and heard (especially from you and Colton, Justin) more so than what I actually know or have seen. The “idea” that the Lions “could” have another All-Pro caliber player on the most important unit on the team and, perhaps, be even better than the excellent unit that included Decker and Ragnow and Sewell put over the top when he was selected. Freeling or Miller may be more logical choices, but is Mahogany a better LG than Borom is a RT? Neither of them woulda started for the Lions in ‘22, ‘23 or ‘24. All the descriptions and assessments I’ve heard and read about Iaone suggest he probably WOULD HAVE!
If they draft Vega, they'd still have a 'hole' at one or the other tackle spots. We're stuck with 4/5ths of the offensive line for this year :)
And in 2025, Detroit's longest runs all came to the right side (Ratledge/Sewell) so I'm hoping they leave Sewell at RT and draft Freeling (Miller as a backup) at LT.
It's easier to hide/scheme around a guard's flaws than it is a tackle's, but I agree Vega would be (or would have been) a terrific piece on the OL. Guess we'll know on Thursday.
Vega is so very intriguing because run game is where we will hang our hats. Run game opens our play book and helps the defense. Could Proctor be that mammoth lineman who will replace Borrom next year?
If they draft Proctor he wouldn’t sit behind Borom. But I don’t think Proctor’s got as high a ceiling as his frame and athleticism would suggest. Bama could NOT run the ball last season and I watched Proctor play a horrible game in Tallahassee last August. I’d rather they take an Edge than Proctor.
Yes. Me too. I agree. To me Ione Vega is more of a sure thing. Right side is safe with Borom and Ratledge. There is a Northwestern tackle who is huge and will be available at 50 or in third and couple of other tackles. Next years crop is very good too.
I’d much rather stand pat and see how Mahogany (or whomever wins the LG competition) plays between Penei and Mays. The job should be much easier this year than it was last year between an injured Decker and the ghost of Glasgow.
I’m ok with Vega at 17 and a tackle in the 4th or 5th to compete with Borom. Or, a tackle at 17 and a OG in the 4th or 5th to compete with Mahogany.

I think the cliche of the draft being the Lions Super Bowl died in 2023. Interest has rightfully been way down the past three years.

Say good bye to Manu?
Manu will fight to be on as third tackle. He does have a chance to develop. No, can’t count him out
