100% agree with the assessment on Campbell's pressers. I live in Jersey so the rep the media gets here is hilarious. They ask questions and the coaches never answer straight. They play the NY game because they know it plays. It's like the team is looking for a chip on their shoulder and the media fits that bill for them. I never miss a Campbell presser because it's refreshing. You're hearing his thoughts. Of course he won't answer everything, but he's going to explain why. It's even a stark difference from previous Lion's coaches. You can just understand their vision from how he talks. It builds trust from fans because we don't feel like we're being fed BS.

The way pricing for players is accelerating, can a $100 million/year QB be not to far in the future? I agree that the QBs must be protected in the pre-season. I wasn't too impressed with Campbell early on, but he sure seems to say what's on his mind and always tries to give honest feedback. I think being a player at one time makes quite a difference in perspective.

Rickey has got to have some kind of tie in to an agency, right? Love the People's Insider

I for one really appreciated the Rickey story and he earned another follower from me as a result. Hope JR is getting close to his 1K subscriber goal!

Justin - I’ve been a paid DFN subscriber since Day 1. To no surprise, I’ve loved all of the interesting, insightful, and creative content. I can’t wait to see what’s ahead for the season. Keep up the great work.

Those Daboll pressers seemed pretty confrontational.

One of the few things that you *don't* want to emulate from the GOAT (Belichick) is his press conference demeanor.

Jason Harwood's avatar

Daboll has to deal with the New York media which is highly confrontational itself. So it's probably difficult to deal with.

I'm not here every day, but this is the third set of joint practices I've spent around the NY media, and the reputation that they are difficult or tough is one of the greatest works of professional fiction ever shared.

I watched his two pressers to hear about his take on the Lions. He was the aggressor during the questioning. He seemed annoyed more then once when the press asked him the same question more than once.

Jason Harwood's avatar

Good to know! Do you think the amount of media members maybe has something to do with that perception?

Justin Rogers's avatar

Maybe. Or they have brash talk radio hosts and columnists where the average person can't separate the producers of opinion, who drop bombs from above, from the daily, on-the-ground reporting.

Jason Harwood's avatar

Sounds reasonable. But TV has told me for years that everyone in New York is a jerk....

John Weeast's avatar

We're different, but we give what we get. The NY media responds more than it injects. The teams here use the media as their "chip" so they're creating the atmosphere they then complain about

Michael Murphy's avatar

It's incredibly hypocritical for Daboll to criticize anyone besides his own players. They were chippy from the get go, and not in a good way. They were poking the bear, trying to get under the Lions skins. It was bush league.

It was 100 % spot on to mention that qbs are off limits. This isn't a Giants thing.....this is a league wide 50 year history set in stone expectation. YOU DONT TOUCH THE QB.

Robert Honeyman's avatar

Dunno. Takes two to tango. My guess is Giants fans see it completely differently. And, per the post, the gripe was specific to defender on his QB. I don't see the issue.

Danny dimes also instigated one of the kerfuffles by shoving Alim in the back after Alim dominated one of his OL. I’m not saying everyone needs to be choir boys, I understand Justin’s take on if roles were reversed, we would be sour, but Danny wants to wear the red kit while also starting shit- can’t go both ways is all I’m saying.

Justin Rogers's avatar

Goff was also in the fray more than once these two days. I think you can want it both ways, for your QB to be protected within the course of the snap-to-whistle play, but also to show a little toughness and not back down when he or his teammates are physically challenged.

Mike W's avatar

Tell me more about Goff getting in the thick of it!!

Great article, yet again!
