Pressers and Zooms: Takeaways from media sessions with 8 recent Detroit Lions' signings
Allen Park — Since last Friday, the Detroit Lions have held media sessions for eight signings. Here’s a takeaway from each of those interviews.
Determined to start again
When Detroit introduced Christian Izien last Friday, my initial expectation was he had been signed as slot cornerback competition. After ensuing additions in the days that followed, my perceptions shifted.
The muscularly built Izien could still be in that nickel mix, but his versatile usage, dating back to college, hint more at backfilling the temporary absence of Brian Branch while the starting safety recovers from last year’s torn Achilles.
Izien, who was a starter in 2024, but lost his job to a rookie following a competitive camp battle last season, is eager to prove he can get back on track with the Lions.
“Last year, things didn't go the way I thought it would or the way I wanted it to,” Izien said. “I've kind of put that in the past, use it as fuel, motivation for this year coming up. I see myself as a starter in this league. I said that last year, and I'll say it again”
Izien has a hard edge to him. That personality, combined with his stocky build, reminded me of another defensive back who bounced between starter and reserve before the Lions signed him: James Ihedigbo.
