Rookie Keanaaina's run-stuffing mantra, mentality and success give him a shot to restart Lions' UDFA streak
Allen Park — Reflecting the true meritocracy of professional football, the Detroit Lions had an undrafted rookie free agent earn a spot on the team’s initial 53-man roster for 15 consecutive years.
In 2025, the counter was reset to zero. That just means a fresh wave of overlooked prospects will be looking to start the next streak.
Last month, the Lions announced the signing of nine undrafted rookies. They recently added a tenth, wide receiver Kyre Duplessis, after fifth-round draft pick Kendrick Law suffered a torn ACL while going through a non-contact drill during an OTA practices.
So who, among that group, is capable of rising up and winning a job? Frankly, any of them. This team’s front office doesn’t add talent without a vision or intent. However, a critical factor is opportunity. And that’s why Aidan Keanaaina arguably has an inside track.
