Allen Park — Here are three observations after a second viewing and a night to ponder the Detroit Lions’ 26-23 win over the Houston Texans.

Worth finding a way

General manager Brad Holmes’ biggest challenge this offseason was fixing the team’s secondary. The team was able to make its run to the doorstep of the Super Bowl in 2023 despite being unable to contain the opposition's best receiver. Across the final six games, including the three postseason matchups, the Lions allowed 973 yards to No. 1 wideouts.

And while everything hasn’t gone according to plan — particularly Emmanuel Moseley suffering another devastating injury — Holmes' remodel and the subsequent turnaround have been impressive.

How impressive? Through nine games, Detroit has the NFL’s best passer rating against.

And of all the moves Holmes made this offseason, regardless of position, none has been as impactful as the trade for cornerback Carlton Davis III.

Put aside Davis’ two interceptions from last night. It’s about more than that. His play style and demeanor fit Detroit like a glove. He’s physical, he doesn’t do a lot of talking and he plays with a chip on his shoulder. And how can you not love the way he throws himself into run support at a position often adverse to those assignments?
