Three and Out: Lions find elusive balance, o-line played angry and projecting John Morton's future with the franchise
Here are three observations after a second viewing and a night to ponder the Detroit Lions’ 44-22 win over the Washington Commanders.
All things in order
Arguably, the most encouraging thing about Detroit’s offensive explosion in Sunday’s victory was a balance that’s been lacking all season. The game plan and execution saw a promising spreading of the ball throughout the team’s arsenal.
We’ve previously noted that since Jahmyr Gibbs took over the starting role in the backfield, the Lions have struggled to find the right rhythm with David Montgomery. For many weeks, the veteran hasn’t entered the game until the third offensive series. That was untenable, since the team would lean on Gibbs in two-minute scenarios and late-game situations when they were trailing, skewing what had been a near-even balance last season.
