Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell, assistant head coach and wide receiver coach Scottie Montgomery and defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers met with the media on Wednesday. Here are the highlights from those sessions.
Jamo’s unselfishness might have something to do with the fact he got paid. If he didn’t have that new contract, not so sure he wouldn’t be more vocal about his lack of opportunities.
Great article, Justin. Glad you covered the LT vs RT topic. But I have to tell you, I don't get it. Nothing against Decker, he is a warrior and I love the guy. But he's getting older and Sewell is one of the best in the game. Why don't they just make the permanent switch to avoid this happening?
To me it should have happened a while ago but it really feels like they should rip the band-aid. I think they should've made the move in the off-season and have the backups practice more on the right side.
LT is one of the most important positions on the team so why not put your best player there. And the odds are less changes due to injury. I'm not in the building but please tell me what I'm missing.
That's an outdated thought process. There's very little difference in the positional value between right and left tackle in the modern NFL because of the way opposing defenses move their best edge rushers to attack weaknesses. And it dismisses the muscle memory built up over years and careers. Flipping from right to left is unnatural for most, particularly when every rep you've ever taken is one way. Same way Kevin Zeitler played only right guard. it's like me asking you to brush your teeth with your opposite hand. Could you do it, yeah. Would it be as good as your dominant hand? No. Sewell is special in his ability to do both at a high level. No reason to shift away from what's working, while it's working, potentially weakening the entire unit.
That is the first logical explanation that makes sense to me, thank you! Side note, if I tried to brush my teeth with my left hand it could get ugly! 🤣
“Then he has an understanding of safety play and corner play,” Montgomery continued. “He knows exactly where he can take some of these chances, where safety’s going to be, where safety’s supposed to be, where sometimes you can be out of place at corners, just seeing the whole thing."
You think Rock Ya-Sin might have the coaching gene?
Here's a suggestion for a topic. The Chiefs host the Lions after a loss in which Chris Jones basically stopped playing on the game-winning TD. It's easy to assume that "grit" is just Lionspeak for what every team demands from players. But is it really? Former pro Danny Kanell said about 70% of players would rather be doing something else. Is Detroit's insistence on players who are all about ball the rule, or the exception?
I remember recently we had a conversation around Penei Sewell falling to us and how that could have changed a lot… imagine if the Jaguars had taken Hutchinson?

I saw Maulet in the ’23 game in Baltimore and I have to say I’m happy he’s here. He was a beast in that game.
That's a good Louisianian name.

Will there be a Lions Collective podcast tonight?
Tomorrow. Tigers-related delay.

Is ASB ok? Heard he missed practice today..
Might just be the standard rest day on Wednesdays for vets. And Saint IS a vet now, technically.
He's hurt. Don't know to what degree.
You could see from the broadcast against Cincy he was flexing his wrist at one point. The camera isolated on him longer than normal.

Race that Hutch pick at #2 to the podium, NFL be damned! Hard to know who they would have taken if Hutch was gone, but nobody would have been equal.
