Allen Park — Since the arrival of coach Dan Campbell, the Seattle Seahawks have been a thorn in the Detroit Lions’ side, emerging victorious in matchups each of the past three seasons.
In 2021, the pummeling was logical. Not only were the Lions still in the initial stages of their rebuild, they were down quarterback Jared Goff, tight end T.J. Hockenson and defensive captain Alex Anzalone. That game was out of reach by the half.
Detroit had more injury issues in a Week 4 meeting the following year, but despite missing Amon-Ra St. Brown, DJ Chark, D’Andre Swift and Jonah Jackson, the offense pulled together to put up 45 points. The problem is Seattle scored 48, with the difference being a Riq Woolen pick-six to open the second half.
That brings us to last season, where the Lions still couldn’t get it done. A couple of turnovers, including another pick-six, plus two failed fourth-down tries, allowed Seattle to build a 10-point lead midway through the fourth quarter. Detroit rallied to send the game into overtime, but lost the coin toss before allowing the visitors to drive 75 yards in nine plays for the game-winning score.
The sides will collide in the season’s first month for the third straight year this Monday, and the undefeated Seahawks look as formidable as any time during that stretch, with a top-10 offense and a stingy defense allowing just 14.3 points per game through three weeks.
What’s different? What’s the same? Let’s explore in our weekly breakdown of the upcoming opponent.
