Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs skips first training camp practice with extension talks ongoing

Allen Park — Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs was a non-participant in the team’s first training camp practice as he and the team are “working through something,” according to coach Dan Campbell.

General manager Brad Holmes declined comment while walking off the practice field Wednesday, but the situation is believed to be related to ongoing contract talks between the team and star running back.

The Lions have been open about their desire to lock up Gibbs long-term, despite having the player under contractual control for the next two seasons after exercising the fifth-year option on his rookie deal this offseason.

Both Gibbs and Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson, drafted four spots ahead of Detroit’s running back, are seeking long-term extensions. Reports out of Atlanta on Wednesday noted that Robinson was in uniform for the team’s first camp practice, but a non-participant.

Under Holmes, Detroit has an established track record of paying its young stars early, often at top-of-the-market rates. Most recently, the team signed All-Pro linebacker Jack Campbell to a five-year extension.

In recent years, the Lions re-upped with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Penei Sewell, Alim McNeill, Kerby Joseph, Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams prior to the expiration of their rookie deals.

Similar to Gibbs’ situation, Sewell, Hutchinson and Campbell all signed with the team still holding two years of control.

In addition to Gibbs, the Lions are also hoping to reach fresh agreements with tight end Sam LaPorta and Brian Branch, two other members of the team’s star-studded ‘23 draft class.

“You guys know how we feel about Gibbs and all of our guys — LaPorta, Branch — and so we'll take this as it comes,” Dan Campbell said. “This will kind of continue. It'll come as it comes. I think that's the best way to say it. This is both sides working through something and we'll take it as it comes, but that's where it is.”
